Types of Industrial Oil Centrifuges

Industrial oil centrifuge is a device used to separate water, solid impurities and colloids from industrial oils such as lubricating oil, hydraulic oil and transformer oil. According to different working principles and application scenarios, it is mainly divided into the following categories:

Classification by the separation principle

(1) Decanter Centrifuge

- Principle: Use the centrifugal force generated by high-speed rotation to make substances of different densities (such as water, solid particles, and oil) settle in layers.

- Features:

- Suitable for the purification of oil with high solid content (such as metal chips and oil sludge).

- Can run continuously with large processing capacity.

- Application:

- Waste oil regeneration (such as cutting oil and gear oil).

- Lubricating oil purification for ships and mining machinery.

(2) Disc Stack Centrifuge

- Principle: Increase the separation area through a multi-layer conical disc group to efficiently separate tiny water droplets (1µm~5µm) and fine particles.

- Features:

- High separation accuracy, suitable for oil with high water content.

- Requires regular slag removal (manual or automatic).

- Applications:

- Dehydration and impurity removal of turbine oil (steam turbine oil) and transformer oil.

- Biodiesel and fuel oil purification.

(3) Tubular Centrifuge

- Principle: Ultra-high speed rotation (10,000~30,000 RPM) of the slender drum to separate extremely fine particles (<1µm) and emulsified water.

- Features:

- Extremely high separation efficiency, but small single processing volume.

- Suitable for laboratories or high-value oil products (such as aviation hydraulic oil).

- Applications:

- Precision lubrication system, high-end transformer oil purification.

Classification by function

(1) Pure centrifugal oil purifier

- Function: Relying only on centrifugal force to separate impurities and water, without a filter element.

- Representative equipment:

- Alfa Laval disc centrifuge (industrial oil-water separation).

- Westfalia sedimentation centrifuge (large waste oil treatment).

(2) Centrifugal + filtration composite type

- Function: The centrifuge is combined with a filter element (such as glass fiber, stainless steel mesh), first centrifugal dehydration, and then fine filtration.

- Advantages: Suitable for highly polluted oil (such as engineering machinery lubricating oil).

- Representative equipment:

- HIFI Filter composite oil filter for vehicles.

(3) Vacuum centrifuge

- Function: Vacuuming during centrifugal separation to enhance the removal of water and gas.

- Application: Deep dehydration and degassing of transformer oil and insulating oil.

Classification by degree of automation

- Manual slag discharge type: requires shutdown to clean sediment (such as a small disc centrifuge).

- Fully automatic type: PLC control, automatic slag discharge and cleaning (such as GEA industrial centrifuge).

Special-purpose centrifuges

(1) Magnetic centrifuge

- Features: Built-in permanent magnets to absorb ferromagnetic particles (such as gearbox wear iron filings).

(2) Low-temperature centrifuge

- Features: Control oil temperature ≤40℃ to avoid thermal oxidation, suitable for sensitive oils.

Key parameters for selection

1. Processing capacity (L/h): select according to the system oil consumption.

2. Separation factor (G force): The higher the separation effect (usually 5,000~15,000 G for disc centrifuges).

3. Applicable oil viscosity: High-viscosity oil (such as gear oil) requires heating or low-speed models.

4. Emission standards: For example, the moisture content must be ≤ 50 ppm (ISO 4406).

Typical application scenarios

- Power industry: Transformer oil dehydration (must meet IEC 60422).

- Ships: Heavy fuel oil (HFO) purification.

- Manufacturing: recycling of cutting oil and rolling oil.

Maintenance points

- Regularly check the drum wear (dynamic balance calibration is required for high-speed centrifuges).

- Avoid oil containing too many fiber impurities (easy to block the disc gap).

The selection of industrial oil centrifuges needs to comprehensively consider the oil type, pollution degree, processing efficiency and cost. For precision systems (such as hydraulic oil), it is recommended to give priority to disc or tube centrifuges.
