Transformer oil regeneration process

Transformer oil regeneration is a process used to restore the chemical and physical properties of aged transformer oil, allowing it to meet the required specifications for reuse. Over time, transformer oil degrades due to thermal and electrical stresses, as well as contamination from moisture, gases, and oxidation by-products. Regeneration is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to replacing the oil.

 

 Steps in Transformer Oil Regeneration

 

 1. Pre-treatment

   - Filtration: Removes solid impurities such as dirt, sludge, and metallic particles using coarse or fine filters.

   - Degassing: Eliminates dissolved gases and moisture using vacuum degassing units.

   - Heating: Oil is heated to reduce viscosity and facilitate efficient processing in subsequent steps.

 

 2. Adsorption/Regeneration

   - Adsorbent Materials: The oil is passed through columns filled with adsorbents (e.g., Fuller’s earth, activated alumina, or silica gel). These materials:

     - Absorb acids, sludge, and polar compounds.

     - Restore oil color and dielectric strength.

   - Reactivation of Adsorbents: Some systems allow the reactivation of adsorbents via heating or regeneration cycles to extend their lifespan.

 

 3. Vacuum Dehydration and Degassing

   - A vacuum chamber is used to:

     - Remove dissolved water to ensure low moisture content.

     - Eliminate gases like oxygen and hydrogen that impair dielectric properties.

 

 4. Filtration (Post-treatment)

   - The regenerated oil is filtered again to ensure the removal of any residual particulates introduced during processing.

 

 5. Testing and Quality Control

   - After regeneration, the oil is tested to confirm it meets international standards (e.g., IEC 60296, ASTM D3487). Key parameters include:

     - Dielectric breakdown voltage.

     - Moisture content.

     - Acidity level.

     - Interfacial tension.
