A fuel oil purifier is a device used to remove impurities such as water, sludge, and particulate matter from fuel oil. It operates based on the principle of centrifugal separation, where the difference in density between the impurities and the fuel oil is exploited to separate them.
1. Centrifugal Separation:
- The purifier operates as a centrifugal separator. When the fuel oil is introduced into the rotating bowl of the purifier, it is subjected to high centrifugal forces, which can be several thousand times the force of gravity.
- Because impurities like water, sludge, and dirt have a higher density than the fuel oil, they are thrown outward toward the periphery of the rotating bowl, while the lighter, cleaner oil remains closer to the center.
2. Separation of Water and Solids:
- The rotating bowl has a series of conical discs inside, which provide more surface area for the separation process. The fuel oil flows upward through these discs, where centrifugal forces separate heavier particles and water from the oil.
- The separated water and sludge are collected at the outermost part of the bowl and are discharged either manually or through a controlled automatic discharge process.
3. Continuous Discharge of Clean Oil:
- As the purified oil reaches the center of the bowl, it flows upward and is continuously discharged through an outlet pipe. This process allows for continuous purification of fuel oil.
4. Gravity Disc (Optional):
- Some purifiers use a gravity disc to determine the interface position between the oil and water. This helps control the level of water removal based on the density difference between the oil and water.
Key Components:
- Bowl Assembly: The main rotating component where separation occurs.
- Disc Stack: A series of conical discs inside the bowl that increase the surface area for separation.
- Gravity Disc (if used): Helps determine the separation interface.
- Inlet and Outlet Ports: Allow for the entry of dirty oil and the exit of clean oil.
- Discharge Mechanism: For automatic or manual removal of separated water and sludge.
Applications:
- Fuel oil purifiers are commonly used in marine engines, power plants, and industrial facilities to ensure clean fuel for combustion, which helps improve engine efficiency and reduce wear.
This method effectively removes contaminants to maintain the quality of the fuel and protect engine components from damage caused by impurities.
