What is oil purification?

Time:2024-12-03 13:46:12  Reading volume:

Oil purification is a process used to remove contaminants and impurities from various types of oils, including transformer oil, hydraulic oil, and lubricating oil, to restore the oil's properties and prolong its service life. The purpose of purification is to maintain the oil's efficiency, protect equipment, and ensure reliable operation. Contaminants such as moisture, gases, sludge, acids, and particulate matter can degrade the oil's quality and harm the equipment it lubricates or cools.

Key Steps Involved in Oil Purification:

1. Mechanical Filtration: Removes solid particles and debris using filters or centrifuges. These filters may be made of materials like paper, fabric, or metal mesh.

2. Vacuum Dehydration: Removes water content from the oil. Water contamination can occur due to leaks, condensation, or poor storage practices. The vacuum dehydration process uses a vacuum chamber to vaporize and separate water from the oil.

3. Degassing: Extracts dissolved gases, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, which can degrade the oil over time. This process involves placing the oil under vacuum conditions, allowing the gases to be released and removed.

4. Centrifugation: Uses centrifugal force to separate contaminants from the oil. Heavier particles and water are forced outward, while the purified oil is collected separately.

5. Thermal Treatment: Heats the oil to lower its viscosity, making it easier to remove impurities like sludge and moisture.

6. Chemical Treatment: Uses chemical additives or adsorbents to neutralize acids, remove dissolved metals, or absorb moisture and sludge.

7. Regeneration: Involves a comprehensive process where contaminants, sludge, and oxidation products are removed, often restoring the oil to a condition similar to new oil.

 Applications of Oil Purification:

- Transformer Oil Purification: Maintains the insulation and cooling properties of transformer oil, ensuring efficient transformer operation.

- Hydraulic Oil Purification: Keeps hydraulic systems running smoothly by preventing wear and tear on components.

- Lubricating Oil Purification: Enhances the performance of machinery by reducing friction and wear.

Regular oil purification extends the life of both the oil and the equipment it serves, leading to cost savings and increased equipment reliability.
